The Federal Reserve's 2026 Small Business Credit Survey found that 46% of small employer firms say they or their employees currently use AI. Most of those report it's making them more productive.
But only 7% call it fully integrated into how they operate. Half are still just experimenting.

The gap right now isn't access to AI. Every business owner has a ChatGPT tab open somewhere. The gap is follow-through: turning a tool someone tried once into a system that runs every day without someone remembering to use it.
What follow-through actually looks like
In practice, follow-through means the automation has an owner, a defined trigger, a defined escalation rule, and someone checking on it on a schedule, the same discipline behind any process that actually survives past month one. That's the gap between the 46% and the 7%, and it's a solvable one.
